Hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") is a mining process by which a mixture of water and chemicals are injected under great pressure into the earth. This pressure fractures underground geologic formations to break apart the rock and release the gas with potential harm to water supplies. AB 591 (Wieckowski) would have required state agencies to create a map of wells where fracking is being used, to provide public access to those maps, and to create a complete list of any chemicals or components used in the processes. However, because mining interests are skittish when it comes to disclosing what chemicals they use.
